Senstar Celebrates 35th Anniversary

Carp-based security company a world leader in perimeter intrusion detection

Ottawa, Canada – October 5, 2016 – Senstar, the world’s largest manufacturer of perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) is today celebrating 35 years since its incorporation in 1981.

Headquartered off Carp Road, Senstar was founded as a spin-off from Bells Corners-based Computing Devices Co. of Canada Ltd. (ComDev), which still exists as part of General Dynamics. Three of the four founding partners were part of a security systems division at ComDev, and established Senstar with the objective to bring security technologies originally targeted for military applications to the commercial market. Initially a seven-employee company, Senstar introduced its first product, Sentrax, a buried cable perimeter security technology, in September 1982 with early adopters including Correctional Service Canada, the British Home Office and Western Australia Corrections.

Today, Senstar employs 75 locally with sales and technical teams around the world, and boasts a broad range of security technologies including buried sensors, fence sensors, pipeline protection and personal duress. Its market-leading products are found in more than 80 countries, in tens of thousands of sites including borders, ports, military and government, oil and gas, correctional, VIP, and other critical sites. Senstar also operates the world’s most comprehensive private perimeter intrusion security test facility to ensure its products perform in the most extreme conditions.

“A lot has changed since 1981, but Senstar’s commitment to safeguarding people, places and property has always remained the same,” said Senstar President Brian Rich, who is also one of the company’s original employees. “We are extremely proud to reach this 35-year milestone and we are looking forward to continued success for many years to come.”

Senstar is an active member of the community, supporting several local charities and volunteering on local projects.

Senstar Announces FiberPatrol-PL for Pipeline Integrity Monitoring

Detects and Locates Third-Party Interference Over a Distance of up to 72 km (45 mi) Per Processor

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada – January 26, 2016 – Senstar, the world’s largest manufacturer of perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) is pleased to announce FiberPatrol-PL, an advanced security system for buried pipelines, optimized to detect third-party interference (TPI). FiberPatrol-PL is the latest addition to Senstar’s renowned FiberPatrol intrusion detection systems, which have been protecting critical infrastructure around the world since 2009.

FiberPatrol-PL uses fiber optic cable buried along the pipeline to detect and locate ground vibrations and acoustic signatures associated with TPI activity. A single FiberPatrol-PL processor can detect and locate TPI over a distance of up to 72 km (45 mi) and within 10 m (33 ft) accuracy.

“FiberPatrol-PL provides the longest protection per single processor currently on the market, addressing one of the biggest issues to effectively securing pipelines – covering long distances between above-ground infrastructure locations where electronic equipment can be installed,” said Senstar’s Product Manager Stewart Dewar. “No electronics, power, communications infrastructure or grounding points are required for spans of up to 72 km (fiber distance), making FiberPatrol-PL a cost-effective solution for long pipelines.”

FiberPatrol-PL detects TPI activity that threatens pipeline integrity: machine or manual digging, heavy machinery operating nearby, and even people walking in the vicinity of the pipeline. The system’s advanced detection algorithms optimize the detection of TPI activity while rejecting nuisance alarms. It can also reject vibrations caused by traffic on roads and railways running parallel or perpendicular to the pipeline.

Senstar Introduces Gallium-PDS

A Passive Detection System (PDS) for cell phones and mobile devices optimized for correctional facilities

Virginia Beach, VA (2015 CMI Conference) – October 13, 2015 – Senstar, the world’s largest manufacturer of perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) is pleased to announce Gallium-PDS, a passive detection system that detects and locates the illegal use of mobile devices.

“Contraband communication devices are a growing problem for correctional facilities as they undermine the objective to keep inmates separated from the outside world and the crime community,” said Senstar Corporation President Brian Rich. “Gallium-PDS was developed specifically for the specialized complex mixed RF environments of correctional facilities. It co-exists with the numerous on-site friendly communication devices, and can pinpoint use of illegal ones to within one inmate cell.”

Gallium-PDS is built around sophisticated, yet affordable signal processors that cover a wide radio frequency (RF) range and have the capability to scan and focus on individual transmitters, thus ignoring irrelevant legal transmitters within and outside the facility. A network of sensors and processors correlates received cellular signals and generates a map of the transmitting devices, with an accuracy of a few meters (approximately 10 ft). The results are superimposed on a building floorplan which enables a response force to quickly and accurately act on the violation.

“Being a passive detection system, Gallium-PDS does not require radio licenses, there are no legal or environmental restrictions, and there is absolute containment of the protected area with no spillover effects,” said Mr. Rich. “As a result, it addresses many of the shortcomings associated with other solutions, such as wideband RF jammers, managed access solutions and energy detectors.”

For a demonstration of Gallium-PDS visit Senstar at booth 5 at the 2015 Construction and Maintenance Institute conference from October 12-15. Also talk to us about Senstar’s other exciting products: FlexZone our ranging fence-mounted detection system; FiberPatrol, our ranging fiber system which provides pin-point detection for long perimeters; Tungsten, our new cyber security Ethernet switch; OmniTrax, our award-winning ranging buried cable detection sensor; and Flare, our personal emergency locating system.

Senstar Introduces the FlexZone™ Wireless Gate Sensor

A simplified intrusion detection solution for sliding and swinging gates

Anahiem, CA (ASIS 2015) – September 28, 2015 – Senstar, the world’s largest manufacturer of perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS), is pleased to announce the FlexZone Wireless Gate Sensor which is designed to secure sliding and swinging gates and complements the coverage of the FlexZone ranging fence-mounted sensor.

The FlexZone Wireless Gate Sensor is an accelerometer-based device that detects attempts to open, cut, climb, or otherwise break through a sliding or swinging gate. The compact, all-weather sensor module is attached directly onto the gate fabric and transmits alarm data to a nearby FlexZone processor over an encrypted link. An ultra-low-power device, the sensor module is powered from its built-in solar panel and/or internal batteries, eliminating the need to route cables from the fence to the gate and simplifying maintenance.

“The FlexZone Wireless Gate Sensor addresses the long-standing challenge of installing and maintaining sensor cables on sliding and swinging gates,” said Senstar’s Vice President of Engineering Jeremy Weese. “It can be used on any gate material and since it is separate from the cable-based system, it can be tuned to the specific construction of the gate, allowing for more accurate detection of intrusions.”

The FlexZone Wireless Gate Sensor consists of two main components: the sensor module and a receiver card installed inside a FlexZone processor. The sensor module analyzes vibration, motion and position data. It transmits intrusion and supervision alarms, power levels, RF link status, and auxiliary input state to the receiver card over the encrypted wireless link. The module also includes an auxiliary input cable for monitoring gate latch contacts and/or other on-gate security equipment.

For a demonstration of the FlexZone Wireless Gate Sensor and the FlexZone ranging fence-mounted sensor, visit Senstar at Booth 309 at ASIS from September 28 – September 30.
